Cleaning business names: how to check one, not a list to pick from

Every list you will find has two hundred invented names on it and none of them tell you whether you can legally use one. What follows is the five-minute check that stops you printing a van with a name someone else already owns.

    • Companies House check
    • Domain check
    • Trade mark check
    • Google Maps check

How do you choose a cleaning business name?

Choose a name that no other cleaning company in your county uses, that has a free .co.uk or .com, that is not a registered trade mark, and that says what you clean or where; then check all four before you spend a pound on it.

A thousand people a month look for a cleaning business name, and lists are how six different "Clean Sweep" companies ended up on Companies House, three of them in the same trade. A name is only good if it is yours, and that takes four checks no list does for you.

Last checked 12 September 2026. Every figure below is sourced and dated, and we re-check them quarterly.

    The four checks, in order

    1. Companies House

Search the register at find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk. Companies House will refuse a name that is the same as an existing company's, and "the same" includes names that differ only by punctuation or by words like "UK" or "Services". A dissolved company's name is usually available but its old reviews and its old reputation may not be gone from Google.

    2. The domain

Check the .co.uk and the .com at any registrar. If both are taken by other businesses, pick another name. A cleaning company whose domain is a hyphenated variant of a competitor's sends every typo to the competitor.

    3. The UK trade mark register

Search trademarks.ipo.gov.uk for the words. A live mark in class 37 (cleaning services) owned by someone else is a reason to walk away. A mark in an unrelated class is usually not, but if it is a household brand it still is.

    4. Google Maps, within twenty miles

The check most people skip. Search the name on Maps around your town. If a cleaner ten miles away trades under it without a limited company, Companies House will not tell you, and their customers will find you when they search. In our count there are 893 claimed cleaning listings within 5km of Camden alone; the collisions are real.

What makes a name work on a website

A name that contains what you do ("Cleaning", "Cleaners", "Oven", "Carpets") gives Google and the customer a clue on every page. A name that contains where you are ("Chelmsford", "Essex", "SE London") does the same for the town pages. A pun ("Spotless", "Squeaky", "Sparkle") is memorable and is also in use by dozens of firms; if you want one, check harder. Avoid a name that a domestic customer cannot spell after hearing it once on the phone.

What we did for our own name

We scored ten candidates, rejected seven because the domain was registered or a live company shared the name, and checked Companies House for the rest. Streak Free Websites passed; a "Streak Free Cleaning Ltd" existed until January 2023 and is dissolved, which we note because you should note the same things about yours.

    Sources and method

Search volumes and cost-per-click figures are Google Ads UK data pulled through DataForSEO on the date shown. Business counts are claimed Google listings in six cleaning categories within a five kilometre radius of the town centre. Prices are read from the supplier's own page on the date shown. Where a figure cannot be sourced, it is not published.
